Garlic
Garlic is a plant in the Allium (onion) family. Throughout ancient history, the main use of garlic was for its health and potent medicinal properties. Its use was well documented by many major civilizations, including the Egyptians, Babylonians, Greeks, Romans, and Chinese. Scientists now know that most of its health benefits are caused by sulfur compounds formed when a garlic clove is chopped, crushed, or chewed. Garlic was also one of the earliest “performance enhancing” substances. It was traditionally used in ancient cultures to reduce fatigue and enhance the work capacity of laborers. Most notably, it was given to Olympic athletes in ancient Greece.
One clove (3 grams) of raw garlic contains:
- Manganese: 2% of the Daily Value (DV)
- Vitamin B6: 2% of the DV
- Vitamin C: 1% of the DV
- Selenium: 1% of the DV
- Fiber: 0.06 grams
- Decent amounts of calcium, copper, potassium, phosphorus, iron, and vitamin B1
Garlic also contains trace amounts of various other nutrients. It contains a little bit of almost everything you need. Garlic supplements boost the function of the immune system. The amount needed is equivalent to about four cloves of garlic per day. Garlic also contains antioxidants. The combined effects on reducing cholesterol and blood pressure, as well as the antioxidant properties, may reduce the risk of common brain diseases like Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
- Tomatoes
The tomato (Solanum Lycopersicum) is a fruit from the nightshade family native to South America.
Tomatoes are the major dietary source of the antioxidant lycopene, which has been linked to many health benefits, including reduced risk of heart disease and cancer.
They are also a great source of vitamin C, potassium, folate, and vitamin K.
The water content of tomatoes is around 95%. The other 5% consists mainly of carbohydrates and fiber.
History of Feta
Feta literally means slice.
The history of cheese is connected to the taming of domestic animals 10,000 years B.C ago. The roots of cheese making are not known with certainty. It is, however, believed that cheese was first produced roughly 8.000 years ago. It is very likely its discovery was completely accidental, during the transport of milk in the stomachs of young animals.
To the modern world, the word Feta means brine cheese, produced in Greece, using specifically sheep and goat milk. According to Greek mythology, the gods sent Aristaios, son of Apollo, to teach Greeks the art of cheese making.
There are many records regarding the production and consumption of cheese in ancient Greece, from Aristoteles, Pythagoras, and other ancient comedy writers. It has been known at least since Homer’s time. The cheese was prepared by Cyclope Polyfimos and described in the 8th B.C. century in Homer’s Odyssey.
